ALABAMA'S PROFESSIONAL LOGGING MANAGER

Relative to many other lines of work, only a small percentage of the U.S. workforce is employed today in the business of logging. Logging is a traditional and essential part of the lives of many Alabamians. To those who do make their living in the woods, the satisfaction of hard work in an outdoors environment is appealing and satisfying. However, over the years, the life of a logger has become more complex. As always, today's logger must be knowledgeable of the woods and how to most efficiently harvest timber. But now he must also be a good businessperson, safety manager and operations planner, and knowledgeable of current forestry practices.

A variety of problems and challenges can overwhelm many loggers. One approach to addressing these problems is the Professional Logging Manager (PLM) Course. Developed by educators from Auburn University, School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System this 2-day course is offered to loggers over a 2-week period and covers:
  • Sustainable forestry principles and the SFI program
  • Best management practices for water quality
  • Reforestation, invasive exotic plants and animals, forest resource conservation, aesthetics and special sites
  • U.S. Endangered Species Act and other measures to protect wildlife habitat
  • Logging Safety
  • OSHA regulations, wage and hour rules, and other emplyment laws
  • Transportation issues
  • Business management
  • Public policy and outreach
  • Awareness of emerging technologies

Each year following the completion of the initial training course, cardholders are required to submit proof of attendance to at least five hours continuing education in order to maintain their recognition as a Professional Logging Manager. Submit your hours to the Alabama Forestry Association either by fax (334) 262-1258, email plm@alaforestry.org, or mail 555 Alabama Street, Montgomery, AL 36104.
